The event was hosted by the Northamptonshire Family Support Project, which allows visually impaired youngsters to meet other young people in similar situations while participating in fun activities. The project is run by national charity Action for Blind People (Action) in partnership with Northamptonshire Association for the Blind (NAB). The event took place at the Northampton Trampoline Centre at Benham Sports Arena in Moulton Park, Northampton with qualified coaches from Northamptonshire Trampoline Gymnastics Academy giving the children the chance to bounce, twist and jump. Kat Smeathers, Family Project Coordinator at Action, said, “It was great to see the kids be so active. Children with sight loss don't always have opportunities to participate in these types of activities because of concerns for their safety. But it's our goal to provide a safe environment where they are able to do the same things as other kids.” The children had a brilliant day to learn new skills and experience a sport that most had never considered. As one enthusiastic boy said "I've never been on a trampoline before – it was a lot of fun. I jumped really high, used the bungee rig and even did a somersault.” | The Northamptonshire Family Support Project, funded by Aiming High for Disabled Children until December 2011, provides activities and support to Northamptonshire blind and partially sighted young people aged 0 to 19 and their families. In addition to the recent trampolining and farm days, the group has been bowling, gone ice skating and played blind cricket – with future events possibly to include indoor sledging and white water rafting. There are regular parents' information evenings, allowing parents to discuss topics such as education and come together to share their experiences. The project also delivers visual awareness training to relevant professionals and provides feedback to local venues about accessibility. For further information about the Northamptonshire Family Support Project and other services provided locally by Action and NAB, please phone 01604 719 193.

Playing safe in the qualification round on Saturday, James opted for 2 simple but brilliantly executed routines to qualify for the top 8 final on the Sunday, which he then won with a final round score of 39.50. His high form scores in the preliminary rounds also earned him the respected Paul Luxon award. James is now working on improving upon his excellent 7th place in last year's world championships. The Northampton club were also represented on the podium by their emerging star under 15 performer, Kathleen Taylor, who finished 3rd in the Grade C event. Well done to both performers and to their coaches at NTGA. Honourable mentions also go to other NTGA members who made it through the qualifying rounds: Penny Mitchell (4th), Amanda Harris (5th) and Kayleigh Haskins (8th) Meanwhile, in the Under 17 Boys Grade C, Matthew Gladders from Aerokinetics had an unexpected but thoroughly deserved win. This too was achieved through extremely good form scores rather than pushing the highest possible tarrif, which bodes well for his future in the higher grades. Congratulations to Matthew and his coaches who are justifiably proud of his consistent achievements this year. Matthew's Peterborough compatriate, Ross Weathrburn managed a creditable 4th place in the Grade C Over 19s, missing a podium place by a mere 0.1 despite a strong 3rd place after the qualifying rounds. Lincoln Imps had their share of success too, with Guy Embrey finishing 3rd in the U17 Nat C, while Henry Gregory finished just outside the medals in the FIG B Under 15s. His score was sufficient however to place him at the top of the UK rankings for his class this year. Also from Lincoln, Matthew Aistrop finished 3rd in the Fig B Over 19s. Finally, well done to Rebecca Broda on her 2nd place in the GMPD Cat 1 National A event. | |
